What the sources say
Called to the apostleship with Richard J. Livingstone, March 25, 1862 (Spirit Prevails, p. 476), and held to bail after the siege as “J. O. Mather” (Deseret News, June 25, 1862). Probably John Ogilvie Mather (1822–1910), born in Scotland, who came to Utah in the Milo Andrus Company of 1855 with his wife Mary Magee and their children, among them Helen, born in 1851 (Church History Biographical Database; FamilySearch KWJD-2KP, probable match); the roll lists Mary and Ellen Mather with him. He died at Salt Lake City in 1910. A second Mather family, that of James Higginson Mather, came the same year in another company; the roll’s James Mather may belong to it.
