What the sources say
Probably the Lars Gurtsen (Lewis C. Gurtsen) who, having left the camp, was captured with William Jones and John Jensen by Peter Klemgaard’s party in the spring of 1862 and held with them in a log house at the fort. After several days he and Jensen cut a hole through the log wall; Gurtsen escaped, and Jensen was caught and returned (Anderson, pp. 98–100, 105). Family Tree has Lars Christian Geertsen (1832–1925), born in Denmark, who reached Utah in September 1861; a Montana county marriage record spells his name L. C. Gurtson. He later lived in the Lemhi Valley, Idaho, and died at Salmon in 1925 (FamilySearch LHN8-BJ8, probable match).
