What the sources say

Joseph Morris's counselor in the church presidency and, in Forscutt's words, the movement's orator; a member of the First Council (Forscutt, Sketch, MS pp. 24, 51); signed letters with Morris and Richard Cook (Spirit Prevails). Named with Morris, Cook, Parson and Klemgaard in the May 1862 writ over the three imprisoned dissenters (Anderson, pp. 101–8; Gems, p. 20). Wounded at the surrender on June 15, 1862, and died that evening in custody (Spirit Prevails, p. 7; Anderson, p. 137); Eardley reports he seemed to be recovering in a wagon, then was dead within the hour, citing William Jones, who went to the wagon (Gems, p. 28). The Daughters of Utah Pioneers hold a pioneer history of him (two files, 9 pages; DUP pioneer histories index, no. 1668).
