About this guide

Where the material comes from, how it is checked, and how to cite it.

How the guide was compiled

The guide brings together work done over more than two decades. Its foundation is the research of C. LeRoy Anderson, whose files at Utah State University (Caine Coll. MSS 10) remain the largest body of Morrisite records. The editor assisted Anderson with the 2010 edition of his history and has studied the Morrisite apostle and later RLDS minister Mark Hill Forscutt since at least 2001, when his first article on Forscutt appeared, including transcribing Forscutt’s journals. Photographs of the sites were taken by the editor from the early 2000s onward. Kirk Watson’s 2026 edition of Morrisite writings, published scholarship, and records shared by descendants fill out the rest.

Standards

  • Citations follow The Chicago Manual of Style. Every work in the bibliography has been examined by the editor in at least one edition; where a page reference comes from an edition not seen, the entry says so. A work known only from another source’s citation will be marked Not yet checked.
  • Facts are drawn from published works with citations; their text is not reproduced. Videos and photographs by others are linked, not copied, unless they have been shared for this guide; those are credited.
  • Dates marked provisional, approximate, or “ca.” are flagged as such and revised when better evidence turns up.
  • Membership rolls and other records naming private individuals are cited but not republished, with one exception: the 1861–62 South Weber roll, printed in 1886 and naming only people baptized more than 160 years ago, is given in full on the Roll of membership page.
  • Changes are listed under What’s new.

Oral and field sources

Records of the editor’s own fieldwork, cited in this guide.

  • Rogers, Eric Paul. “Memorandum of Recollection: South Weber Door-to-Door Visit.” Signed memorandum, November 1, 2026, recalling an unrecorded canvass of South Weber residents made before February 2004 in preparation for the editor’s 2006 John Whitmer Historical Association paper. PDF

Much of the record is still in private hands. This site is noncommercial and does not ask for or accept money.

Descendants

If your family kept letters, diaries, photographs, or church papers, they can be described here, and digitized or placed in a repository if you wish. Nothing is published without your permission.

Researchers

Send citations, corrections, and new finds. Theses, conference papers, and local histories are especially welcome, since they are the hardest to locate.

Forscutt papers

For the forthcoming edition of Forscutt’s “Sketch of Joseph Morris,” the editor would be glad to learn of other writings by Mark H. Forscutt: letters, diaries, sermons, or the earlier Morrisite history he is said to have written, whether in repositories or in family hands.
