Ordained an apostle in June 1861 (Anderson, p. 67); named in revelations with John E. Jones (Spirit Prevails, p. 100) and John Parson (Spirit Prevails, p. 128), and in Morris's notice to Parson and Forscutt to close the office, August 30, 1861 (Spirit Prevails, p. 675); a member of the First Council, and fined $56.80 by the Farmington court-martial in 1861 for refusing militia training (Forscutt, Sketch, MS pp. 34, 51); later an RLDS minister. Joseph Smith III, who counted him an early friend, preached his funeral at Nebraska City in October 1903 (Joseph Smith III and the Restoration, 1952, p. 433). His "Sketch of Joseph Morris" (Church History Library, MS 702) is the subject of the editor's documentary edition, in preparation. The Daughters of Utah Pioneers hold a pioneer history of him (44 pages; DUP pioneer histories index, no. 36981).
